designer enzo mari (1932-2020) was a celebrated italian designer, artist and theorist, known for his profound reflection on the social role of design. Born in novara, he trained at the brera academy in milan, the city where he worked throughout his life. Since the 1950s he distinguished himself for an ethical and political approach to design, with a strong commitment to authenticity, functionality and self-production. Mari was among the first to criticize design as an expression of consumerism and sought accessible and democratic solutions. Among his most iconic works are the "perpetual calendar" (1963) and "chair 1" from the project self-design? (1974), which invited anyone to build their own furniture by simple means. He collaborated with companies such as danese, artemide, alessi and driade, and was also a passionate theorist, authoring fundamental texts such as funzione della forma (1970). Mari taught at several italian universities and was very influential for the new generations of designers. Consistent and radical to the end, he refused celebratory exhibitions as long as he lived. He died in milan in 2020, leaving a legacy of thought that is still very relevant today
