This striking portrait of a matador in profile is the work of American artist and designer Vernon Grimmer (20th Century). Set against a vivid crimson and yellow-gold background, the matador is depicted in traditional attire with a black cap and red sash, captured with bold contrast and focused elegance.
Vernon Grimmer studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and trained in architecture at the Armour Institute of Technology (now the Illinois Institute of Technology). During the Great Depression, he contributed to public mural projects and later, during World War II, worked with the Austin Company designing battleships, aircraft carriers, and submarines. In the post-war era, Grimmer expanded his design work to include residential homes, motels, schools, and commercial buildings.
Presented in a sleek black Lucite frame, this work blends fine art and design sensibility—a reflection of Grimmer’s multifaceted career. A rare example of his portraiture, this piece offers insight into a lesser-known but accomplished American modernist.
