Comes from a rare First Limited Edition folio of the artist printed by Albert Skira in Geneva, Switzerland, in the 1940s. Printed on one side. Numbered at the lower right corner: 5. Excellent condition - never framed.

Artists have never reached agreement as to the problem of the portrait; must it, or need it not be, 'lifelike' in the literal sense? Those who say it must, set out to reveal the personality of the sitter by stressing certain features (sometimes almost to the point of caricature), with an eye to psychological expressiveness. But this is usually done at the expense of the strictly pictorial quality of the composition. The other school seeks, above all, to create by the disposition of the tracts of color and the distribution of light, a 'living' image of the subject. Cezanne is one of these, and this portrait of Mme Cezanne, while very much 'alive', is a masterpiece of plastic sensitivity at its purest. See less
