This French 19th century trumeau mirror combines the architectural with the artistic, placing an oil on canvas work in the top panel above the rectangular mirror plate below. Set within a painted frame of sage green that is trimmed in gilt molding of fishscale motif, the artwork is mostly blues and greens (which reinforces the pastoral setting) except for touches of pink as a romantic suggestion. It depicts a rural landscape on the edge of a river or stream where a young couple are resting beneath a tree joined by a dog and baby lambs. He leans toward her with affection, but her pensive face is oriented toward something farther afield. The original mirror plate sparkles with foxing and crystallization.
