A charming example of early 20th-century British ceramics, this Wemyss Ware pottery cat captures the whimsical essence of the famed Scottish pottery tradition. Standing 10.5 inches high by 9 inches wide and 4.5 inches deep, the seated feline form features striking hand-painted chrysanthemum blossoms in rich plum tones with deep green foliage scattered across a soft ivory ground, accentuated by fine age-appropriate craquelure.

This particular model is distinguished by its inset green glass eyes, a rare and desirable feature that brings lifelike character to its gentle expression. Subtle black accents to the ears, paws, and facial features enhance the modeling, while the cat’s alert posture and inward gaze evoke a contemplative presence.

The underside bears the transfer mark “Plichta London England,” indicating this was produced for or by the Plichta retail house, which in the mid-20th century revived and continued the Wemyss Ware tradition after its original Fife-based production ceased.
