Alexander Orloff spent his childhood in Voronezh, Russia, leaving in 1924 to attend the Ukrainian School of Fine Arts in Prague where he studied under Sergey Mako (1889-1953) and completed his art studies in 1928. From 1929, he worked as an illustrator in Prague before moving to Paris in 1933. Over the course of a long career, Orloff was the recipient of numerous medals, prizes and juried awards. He exhibited widely and with success including, in Prague, at the gallery Prague Karasek (1933) and, in Paris, at the Salon des Tuileries, the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon de l'Art Libre and, in 1957, at the Réalités Nouvelles. He also had solo exhibitions at Galerie des Anciens et Modernes (1969), Le Soleil (1973, 1975), Andre Volloton (1975), and Les Arts Plastiques Modernes (1975). Orloff also organized several exhibitions in Nice with Sergey Mako, and participated in numerous exhibitions of Russian émigré artists in Paris. The artist is listed in Benezit's definitive dictionary of artists and his work is held in private and public collections including the permanent collection of the National Gallery in Prague.
