The Navy's King Neptune ceremony, also known as the "Crossing the Line" ceremony, is a traditional maritime rite of passage that initiates sailors who have never crossed the equator. The ceremony is a way to induct these "pollywogs" (sailors who haven't crossed the equator) into the "Ancient Order of the Deep" as "shellbacks" (sailors who have crossed the equator).
