Francois-Marie Arouet (November 21, 1694 –May 30, 1778), known as Voltaire, was a famed French philosopher and prolific Enlightenment writer. Among his passions, he was noted as an advocate of civil rights, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and the separation of church and state.
