Description of the object:
Sculpture depicting a reclining ibex, made of stoneware, clay slightly softened with kaolin, then glazed, entirely decorated by hand, subsequently glazed with a third firing, created by the famous Neapolitan-born ceramist Guido Cacciapuoti, who worked in Milan, signed with a pen directly on the ceramic mixture by the artist. The sculpture can be dated to the early decades of the 20th century, around 1920-1930.
Useful information for evaluating the item:
Our research shows that the highest auction results achieved by Guido Cacciapuoti range from €1,500 to over €3,500, while the highest auction result achieved, for a sculpture depicting a pair of angelfish with a large wooden base, is €19,000 (€22,800 including 30% auction fees). In particular, we found a sculpture depicting three small fawns, slightly larger than ours, listed at auction for €500-1,000 in 2020. On various online art and antiques sales sites, however, there are several Cacciapuoti sculptures listed from €300-500 up to over €4,000, depending on the size and rarity of the sculpture. For sculptures of similar size and artistic quality, prices range from a minimum of €400-500 to €700-800. This is to give a general idea of the value of Cacciapuoti ceramics and, more specifically, the value of ceramics similar to ours.
Final considerations on the object:
The use of various shades of blue, together with white, to decorate an animal that normally appears in various shades of ocher and brown in nature is very unusual. This gives the sculpture a truly interesting luminosity.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
Guido Cacciapuoti, born in Naples on August 11, 1892, belonged to an ancient family of majolica makers from whom he learned the secrets of ceramic art. In 1927, he founded "Grès e ceramiche d'arte" in Milan with his brother. A highly talented modeler, he stood out for his beautiful sculptures. In 1930, due to the premature death of his brother, he became the sole owner of the company. The factory was immediately successful and became internationally famous, especially for the sculptures created by Guido Cacciapuoti, who died in 1953 and is now considered one of the most important Italian ceramists of the first half of the 20th century. In the last photos, we have included some biographical notes on the artist for those who wish to learn more.
