Kurt østervig is a danish designer born in 1912.
he was first a naval architect, which is evident in his fluid lines and sensuality.
he branched out into furniture design when he collaborated with the e. Pedersen & søn studio.
he is now recognized for his woodwork, particularly with oak, teak, and rosewood.
this 1950s coffee table is one of his iconic tables. It is called "surfboard," "elliptical," or "boomerang."
why this name? its elliptical shape naturally resembles a surfboard. It also evokes the hull of a boat or the silhouette of a floating pontoon.
continuing with the boat theme, it is made of teak or rosewood, with a solid wood base (often oak or beech) that provides a contrast with the tabletop. Its legs are slightly inclined, in a v-shape.
it was never produced on a large scale or industrially, unlike other danish designers of the same era.
this original vintage piece is stamped under the top: "cfc silkeborg made in denmark"
