Very large and striking Tanuki figure, crafted in the 1960s from traditional Shigaraki stoneware. This type of pottery from the Shiga region is known for its sturdy character and warm, earthy tones. A maker’s mark is impressed into the clay.
The Tanuki—a mythical Japanese raccoon dog—is a beloved symbol in Japanese folklore. with its cheerful, slightly mischievous expression and round belly, it is associated with good fortune, prosperity, and protection. Tanuki figures are traditionally placed at the entrances of homes, shops, and restaurants to welcome guests and bring luck.
Due to its impressive size, this figure is particularly well suited as a statement piece in a garden, near a pond, on a terrace, or as a distinctive accent in an interior with Japanese influences.
Let this iconic creature, with its rich symbolism and handcrafted charm, bring a touch of Japanese tradition to your space.
