Condition: Please refer to the photos for details. The paper shows some natural yellowing consistent with age, adding to its vintage character. One mat has minor signs of surface dirt. All frames are uniform in size; however, two feature a green-tinted gilt finish that offers a subtle variation from the other four (see photos for comparison).

Henry Heath was a 19th-century British illustrator and caricaturist known for his satirical and humorous depictions of Victorian society. Active primarily in the 1820s and 1830s, Heath contributed to the flourishing print and caricature scene in London, often drawing comparisons to contemporaries like George Cruikshank.
“The Sportsman’s Alphabet” is one of his notable illustrated works, a whimsical and cleverly crafted ABC book that combines rhyming verse with comical illustrations. Each letter introduces a sporting term or theme—ranging from angling and boxing to fox hunting—reflecting the period’s enthusiasm for country pursuits and gentlemanly sports.
