Charles Paul Gruppe (1860-1940) was a Canadian-born American painter, largely self-taught though he did study in Holland. Upon his later return to the United States he would both paint and broker works in the Dutch painting style, working to popularize it among the American art market. His love of painting left works in fine collections across Europe and America, along with earning gold medals at Paris and Rouen and two silver medals from the World's Fair in St. Louis in 1903.
His skill in subtle coloration is clear in this simple yet gorgeous painting of the sky above open water, a small splash of paler blue surrounded by a clouding horizon. Signed on the lower left Chas. P. Gruppe in white paint (not to be mistaken with his similarly-named nephew, who signed C. Gruppe). Painted on canvas panel with the title "Chesapeake Bay" scrawled in pencil across the back, 10 inches tall and 14 inches wide. A rustic wood frame painted in a natural color completes this coastal treasure, framed to 14 1/4 inches tall and 18 3/8 inches wide. With wire, ready to hang.

All tight, solid, and ready to hang. less
