A beautiful 19th-century steel engraving titled "Drafting the Declaration of Independence," published by Johnson, Fry & Co., New York after the celebrated painting by American historical artist Alonzo Chappel. The scene portrays the Committee of Five—Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Robert R. Livingston, and Roger Sherman—as Jefferson presents the first draft of the Declaration of Independence.
Printed circa 1867, the engraving exhibits the exceptionally fine line work characteristic of Victorian steel engravings, capturing remarkable detail and tonal depth. It is presented in a handsome antique gilt wood frame with a warm, naturally aged patina that complements the historical subject.
The print retains its original publisher's inscriptions and has developed an attractive antique character. Age-related toning, foxing, and water staining along the lower margin are present, consistent with its age, but the image itself remains crisp and highly decorative. A wonderful addition to a study, library, office, or Americana collection.
