It measures about … Read more This is an especially rare 2+ gallon antique primitive moonshine whiskey jug or crock with salt glaze. It measures about 8 1/2" diameter and is almost 14" tall. I was not sure what size to call it so I poured cups of water into it and it took 34 cups of water to fill it up -- 32 cups would have been 2 gallons. So it will hold more than 2 gallons but I'm going to call it a 2 gallon moonshine jug. I have no idea how close to the top someone would have typically filled it in yesteryear.

I got this from an estate auction where the gentleman had built an entire old West town -- saloon, livery stable, church building, general store, mercantile store, and more, and with old wagons, doctor buggies, and more located around the town. He was extremely picky with putting only authentic period pieces in his town, so I am pretty sure this piece dates to the late 1800's.

It is in outstanding condition, especially for a handmade crock. There are some signs of hand craftsmanship you wouldn't find for a machine-made piece -- a little crease built into the ceramic here and there, etc. If you look very hard you will find just a couple of tiny chips on the salt glaze part on a couple of edges.
