Item description:
Small perfume bottle, made of fine glazed hard-paste porcelain, entirely hand-decorated with floral motifs and finished in pure gold. The floral decoration features small bas-relief sections made of porcelain paste, with a technique similar to "pâte sur pâte," signed under the base with hand-painted cursive lettering in gold "Limoges France." The bottle is made in the Directoire style and dates back to the late 1700s. The manufacturer, which has a mark very similar to the one on this bottle, is that of the Grellet brothers, founded in 1771 and closed in 1796.
Final considerations on the item:
Our flask is particularly beautiful thanks to its extremely delicate floral decoration, all done with a brush tip and enriched with splashes of porcelain paste that make it truly unique. But above all, its shape is unique, with a central hole that makes it extremely rare to find. In full Directoire style from the late 1700s, with simple circular lines, like all the decorations, even the slightly stepped bas-relief finishes on the sides, decorated in pure gold, are rather simple in their lines. Even the cap is elegant but simple with golden rays, without relief flowers or particularly exaggerated decorations. This was the distinctive feature of the Directoire style, which sought to achieve greater simplicity and practicality than the previous Louis XVI style.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
Limoges porcelain is a hard-paste porcelain produced since 1771 in various factories in the city of Limoges and in general in the Haute-Vienne department. Limoges had a tradition in the decorative arts as it had been the major European center of enamel production during the Middle Ages.
