designer gilbert portanier (cannes, 1926 - vallauris, 2023) was a celebrated french ceramist, painter, and sculptor. After studying architecture in paris, he abandoned this path to devote himself to art. In 1948, during a stay in brussels, he came into contact with important artists and philosophers, including magritte and sartre. Back in france, he discovered ceramics in vallauris, where he also met pablo picasso. In 1949 he founded the atelier 'le triptyque' and began working as a self-taught ceramist. His art combined sculptural forms with intensely colored pictorial decoration. He experimented with contrasts between glossy and opaque glazes, and later turned to oxides on white clay. He collaborated for a long time with the german rosenthal manufactory. His works were exhibited in museums throughout europe and awarded prizes at numerous international biennials. In 2018 the fondation gilbert portanier was established to enhance his legacy. He is remembered as a 'wizard of color' and innovator of modern ceramics.
