This is 1 gallon size primitive antique whiskey jug or crock.
It is salt glazed, as you can tell from the texture of a photo I took up close. It is primitive as you can tell from the not-quite-perfect smoothness of the stoneware surrounding the jug -- it is almost perfect, but not so perfect that it would be factory made.
I got this from an estate sale that looked like it came from an episode of American Pickers. The fellow had built an old West town complete with saloon, general store, livery stable, church building, etc. and had horse wagons, a doctor's buggy, and just about every kind of building and implements you might find in a late 1800's old West town. He was not short of resources, and everything he had was appropriate to the mid-to-late 1800's time period.
This whiskey jug or crock measures about 10 1/2" tall and has about a 7 1/2" diameter at the bottom. If you check it out very carefully you might find a tiny chip or two around the edges of the stoneware surrounding the jug -- but it is in amazing condition for its age!!! It weighs around 6 lbs.

It has a couple of very tiny chips around the edges that are not obvious without close inspection. Since it is primitive and handmade, the ceramic is not perfectly smooth but it is a wonderful example of excellent craftsmanship. less
