This beautiful hand blown glass vase by Blodgett Glass depicts the ocean at sunset with distant birds. The subtle sky glows in hues of gold, rose and lavender. The orange sun is perfectly placed and the bubbles at the base speak of the churning ocean.
Tapering from 7" at top to 2.75" at bottom of vase, this vase has a large 4.75" opening to display flowers. Signed and numbered ssvc-92 on base of vessel. Significant pieces weighing approximately 15 lbs.
Buzz Blodgett has been blowing glass since 1969. He is from a family of artists. In 1978 he learned new techniques from a Swedish glassblower and currently uses them in many of his glass creations. He says "I was always impressed with the frozen liquidity of glass, which seemed to mesh with my love for the ocean and surfing." All his glass is handmade using the same methods utilized since ancient times and each piece is signed and dated. He has taught glass blowing at the University of California, San Diego. Buzz's work is included in many public and private collections, including the Lannan Foundation and has been exhibited at the renowned Corning Museum of Glass.
Born and raised in California, Buzz has lived by the ocean and surfed all of his life. It is no surprise that his love of water would transcend into his work. In his Seafoam series, Buzz creates vases, bowls, perfume vials and oil lamps which include an internal spray of bubbles in the thick, clear crystal base of the works. He creates the bubbles through a special formulation of natural mineral compounds blended into molten glass and then encased in crystal. Buzz often incorporates areas of thick crystal layered with transparent colored glass into his designs. He will also combine multiple colors of transparent glass for an unusual color which is praised for its high quality of purity and brilliance.
