The naturalistic base is signed F. Pautrot. Ferdinand Pautrot (1832–1874) was a prominent sculptor of the Animalier School, celebrated for his detailed bronzes of birds, hunting dogs, and wildlife. Active in the mid-19th century, he exhibited at the Paris Salon and worked in the realistic style characteristic of the Animalier movement—a group of primarily French artists devoted to the faithful depiction of animals.
