The piece showcases the distinctive “birdcage” design with vertical spindles connected by horizontal stretchers, creating the cage-like appearance that gives this style its name.

Crafted from solid hardwood with a warm honey-toned finish that has developed a beautiful patina over the decades. The bench features gracefully curved arms, a contoured solid wood seat for comfort, and sturdy tapered legs with stretcher base construction typical of quality Windsor furniture, using mortise and tenon joints. The proportions are beautiful.

The underside reveals the Hagerty Colonial circular maker’s mark along with an inscription by the craftsman, making this a documented piece of American furniture history. The inscription reads "by Warren Ackerson for Ann and Peter, 1958" The bench design was inspired by, and modified from the antique birdcage Windsor chair belonging to the Harrison Gray Otis House in Boston.
