Item description:
Vase from the "Rimini blu" series in majolica ceramic, entirely hand-modeled on a potter's wheel, glazed with thick, compact, extremely hard majolica glazes in various shades of ultramarine blue, made by Aldo Londi in full Art Deco style in Montelupo Fiorentino for the "Bitossi" factory. Made in the first half of the 20th century, signed under the base with catalog number and place of origin, "Italy."
Useful information for evaluating the item:
Our research on the web shows that Aldo Londi's vases, produced for the "Bitossi" factory in the "Rimini blu" series, are offered for sale at a minimum of €600-700 up to over €1,200-1,300 on the most important online art and antiques platforms. We would like to point out that all the vases we found are without lids, newer and, in our opinion, less beautiful than ours.
Final considerations on the object:
This vase is undoubtedly one of Aldo Londi's oldest pieces, as can be deduced from the patina and the evident age of the glaze. It is also very wide with extremely thick ceramic biscuit, which makes it imposing even though it is not particularly tall. It is accompanied by an impressive and beautiful lid with a square knob, which is truly beautiful. Bear in mind that the vase weighs over 2 kg and 200 g. The decoration work with the gouge and the patina under the base in the unglazed part is beautiful. The lid also has a glaze that changes from blue to green, like the most beautiful and oldest vases in this series, with a truly interesting color change.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
Aldo Londi, born in Montelupo Fiorentino in 1911, began working at a local ceramics factory at a very young age. After completing his apprenticeship, he worked at the Montelupo factory "Ceramiche Artistiche F.lli Fanciullacci" until 1935, when he moved to the "Bitossi Ceramiche" factory. At the end of World War II, after spending a long period of captivity in South Africa, where he set up a primitive kiln, he returned to Italy and resumed working for "Bitossi," where he remained until 1976, continuing to visit occasionally even after his retirement. In 1946, he was appointed artistic director of the factory and, faithful to a serial conception of ceramic products, he began producing highly creative and modern furnishing objects. His works for the Bitossi factory were featured in numerous important exhibitions in the sector, including the fairs in Prague and Dusseldorf, the Milan Triennale, the International Competition of Contemporary Ceramics in Faenza, and the Biennale d'Arte Ceramica in Sesto Fiorentino. He left the management of the factory in 1976. Proof of the high level of quality achieved is the fact that numerous works designed and created by Aldo Londi for the Bitossi factory, known since the 1970s as Ceramiche Flavia, are marketed worldwide by Studio Rosenthal. Aldo Londi died in Montelupo Fiorentino in 2003.
