Early 20th Century French Stoneware Confit Pot
A French stoneware “grès vernissé” confit pot with traditional mottled brown glaze from the South West of France.
This is a charming piece owing to its condition, remarkably very few chips and marks for a piece of household pottery over 100 years old.
This beautiful pot would have been manufactured in the south west of France dating from the early 1900s.
These pots were used to cook and preserve “Confit de Canard”, preserved duck and meat preparations preserved by a thick layer of fat.
One of the most famous recipes being “Cassoulet” which originated in a town called Castelnaudary in the south west.
It is still a favourite winter dish of the region.
These stoneware vessels were once used daily in French country kitchens and can be found in different hues and sizes. Crock jars with two handles, a very basic ceramic slow cooker.
These pots are sturdy and stylish and will blend into any style of home, they can be used in kitchens for cutlery storage, flowerpots or just conversation pieces.
A French piece of history to grace your home.
