Within the extensive Kuba masking tradition—comprising over twenty distinct varieties—this particular form functioned during initiation ceremonies, personifying Woot, the mythological first ancestor who named creation's elements and established civilization, earning the Kuba their cultural identifier as "Children of Woot."
