Hedwig Koch-Becker Handled Jar. Bauhaus Related Artist, Velten, Germany Circa 1924-1925
The smallish liquor jug is unsigned except for the numbers "685". That said, her glazes are almost like a fingerprint. The glazes let me know it was produced in Velten, but it took longer to identify the potter. I can prepare multiple pages (translated from German) or, better yet, provide links about the artist and examples of her work if requested. I can guarantee this to be her work without question.
I rarely use superlatives and even more rarely use the phrase RARE, but this is a true rarity. During my half century of buying and selling Bauhaus Keramik, I have never come across one of her pieces before. Hedwig Koch-Becker is a particularly interesting artist-potter. Marguerite Freidlaender Wildenhain (Pond Farm fame) and Margaretta Heymann, both produced pieces for the Bauhaus, would also be included in a small group of important women potters from the Weimar Era.
Koch-Becker, while less well known, fits into a unique potter's from Velten. The kilns at Velten Vordamm fired pots for the Bauhaus artisans before the newly formed school had its own comprehensive pottery facilities in conjunction with their training workshops.
I have referenced my copy of the book: Märkische Ton Kunst, Berlin und Brandenburg, Keramik der 20er und 30er Jahre. The covered cache-pot on the front is an example of one of her pieces. The second photo is of a handled mug she produced in 1924. Nine additional ceramics by Hedwig Koch-Becker are illustrated as 295-304. A similar Likorkruge is shown in the center of 301. It is in the collections of the Keramik Museum Velten, including other works by the artist.
That piece, along with tumblers, was originally exhibited at:
Die Form ohne Ornament. Werkbundausstellung 1924 (Form Without Ornament. Werkbund Exhibition 1924
The Bröhan-Museum exhibited her work along with those of several women potters from the Wiener Werkstätte. This included Ena Rottenberg, Emmy Roth, Felice Rix, and Kitty Rix, among others, at the Bröhan-Museum
