Item description:
Small bottle-shaped excavation vase, with a cylindrical body, inverted funnel shoulder, and elongated cylindrical neck with a disc mouth, made of pink glass, therefore produced with the addition of iron, cobalt, and copper oxides or gold and colloidal tin. The vase has been treated with acid to give it the appearance of an antique vase found in an excavation, hence the name "excavation glass." It dates back to the second half of the 20th century and is signed "Cenedese" under the base with acid. In addition, also under the base, there are two original cartouches from the Cenedese artistic glassworks, confirming the authenticity of the piece.
Useful information for evaluating the object:
Our web research shows that the artistic glassworks of Cenedese boast numerous auction results, and the four highest, as far as Gino Cenedese, founder and leading exponent of the manufacture, are concerned, range from €2,000 to over €2,700.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
The Gino Cenedese e Figlio glassworks was founded in 1946. Its founder was Gino Cenedese (1907-1973), who already had extensive experience in the sector, having worked alongside various master glassmakers (including Giacomo Cappellin) and who brought together the most skilled craftsmen of the time in his company: Alfredo Barbini, Angelo Tosi, Gino Fort, and Pietro Scaramal. Under the guidance of Gino Cenedese, sole owner since 1949, the glassworks soon established itself nationally and internationally for the high quality of its production. On the one hand, it continued the ancient tradition of Murano glass—with blown glass, goblets, vases, plates, and Venetian chandeliers—and on the other, it embraced the influences of contemporary art, establishing close ties with the artistic and cultural milieu of the time. It participated in various editions of the Biennale, the Triennials in Milan, and other important international exhibitions, collaborating with various artists. In the 1950s, it benefited from the stable contribution of personalities such as Napoleone Martinuzzi, a sculptor, and, from the 1960s, Antonio Da Ros, with whom it developed new creations and techniques. The company also produced important works in the field of lighting, with commissions of great international significance. Since Gino's death, his son Amelio has continued his work in close collaboration with the glassworks' craftsmen, forming one of the largest employment complexes in Murano.
