Description of the item:
A wonderful sculpture in submerged Murano blown glass, pink opaline, obtained by adding colloidal gold, while the wings and beak are in white opaline glass. The sculpture depicts a duckling or chick and there is a red Murano label under the base, confirming that this is an original Murano glass piece. The sculpture is not signed by the artist, but can be attributed to the Seguso artistic glassworks, which often produced glassware similar in workmanship and subject matter and used this particular red cartouche. The object can be dated to around 1970. The sculpture is larger than it appears in the photos, thirteen cm high but very wide and heavy, weighing almost a kg of glass.
Useful information for evaluating the item:
Seguso glassworks is one of the most important glass manufacturers in Murano, founded by Archimede Seguso. Archimede Seguso is an important Murano artist who has achieved numerous auction results, the four highest of which, for the largest and most complex pieces, range from over €66,000 to over €80,000, giving a general idea of this artist's importance. To give a more specific idea of the value of sculptures such as ours, we found a small elephant in transparent amber glass and aventurine with gold leaf, simpler in workmanship and also 13 centimeters tall like our duckling, which sold for €300 plus auction fees of 25-30%.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
Archimede Seguso (Murano, December 17, 1909 – Murano, September 6, 1999) was an Italian entrepreneur and master glassmaker. Considered "a living encyclopedia of glass" (as defined by Giuseppe Cappa in his book Le Genie Verrier de L'Europe), he was one of the most famous Venetian glassmakers, distinguishing himself above all in the working of heavy glass (known as massello), boasting numerous auction results and thousands of collectors. His glassworks is considered one of the most important Murano glassworks ever to have existed, with which numerous important master glassmakers have collaborated.
