It would have been used … Read more This large antique French demijohn (Damme Jeanne) bottle is housed in a woven wicker basket.

It would have been used for transporting spirits, wines, ciders, oils and vinegars in the early part of the 20th Century.
The bottle itself is a very rounded - pot bellied shape with a short stubby neck made of very thick glass. They were all of that period manually blown.
The glass is dressed in a wicker sleeeve to provide protection and has two handles incorperated into the weaving for lifting.
The capacity was approx. 30 litres depending on the weight of the substance being transported, some exist up to 50 litres.
Just out of interest a 1 litre of water equates to a kilo, so you can imagine their weight when full.
