Tem description:
stoneware plate entirely hand-modeled and decorated with glazes featuring archaic rural figures in a primitive style, glazed in blue and vitrified, while the rest of the plate is glazed in brown and acid-treated with a matte finish. The plate is signed on the back of the base with the incused signature ronchi, made by cesare ronchi, an important italian ceramist, sculptor, and engraver. There are also two numbers on the back, which i assume are the catalog number and the decoration number. The plate dates back to the second half of the 20th century. It is a good size and the ceramic biscuit is excellent, compact, very hard, very thick, and heavy, considering that the object weighs almost 1.5 kg.
useful information for evaluating the object:
our research shows that cesare ronchi has achieved numerous auction results, especially for bronze sculptures, and the four highest results we have found range from €400 to €1,400. In addition, several of his ceramics are preserved in various italian museums, such as a large pot with a lid and two handles, made of stoneware, decorated with abstract motifs in white, brown, and yellow on a brown background, preserved at the m.i.s.a. - museum of the state art institute in faenza. We have not found many ceramics by this artist for sale, as they are extremely rare, which makes this plate a particularly important item for art lovers and collectors.
information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
cesare ronchi was an important italian ceramist, sculptor, and engraver born in 1936 in imola (bologna, italy) and died on june 28, 2024, in castel bolognese (ravenna, italy). After completing his studies (1959) at the art institute of faenza, where he was a pupil of angelo biancini, he distinguished himself in the same year by winning prizes at the ceramics exhibitions in vicenza and lerici. Between 1960 and 1970, he defined one of the traits of his artistic personality by creating numerous ceramic sculptures, with which he won several competitions. In 1972, he also began to take an interest in bronze and wood. He combined his artistic activity with teaching at various italian art institutes, eventually becoming professor of sculpture at the g. Ballardini institute of ceramic art in faenza. He works in castel bolognese, at via guidi 18. This piece has an attribution mark,
