The form is irresistibly tactile, inviting, balanced and elegant. The glaze is a masterclass. The cobalt streaks in the teal are vivid, intense and deceptively simple. Ellice T. Johnston was an unsung talent. She got her painting undergrad from Berkley and enrolled at Chouinard (now CalArts) in 1950, studying with Susan Peterson whom she followed to USC. She cofounded Irving Place Studio in LA, and Clayfolk in Ashland, Oregon which is still open today. This piece shows why she stands with the greats of modernist ceramics! See less
