a french stoneware “grès vernissé” cream pot with a mottled mustard coloured glaze from paris, france.
this charming piece, marked union des cremiers paris was used for the delivery of cream in and around paris in the 19th century.
the stamp of the union is clearly embossed showing number 8 rue giffard, paris. Which still exists to this day. Photos can be found on the internet.
these pots were owned by the union and the system was very similar to how we used milk bottles years ago. Cleaned by the user and collected from the doorstep when delivering a new sealed pot.

it is without its stopper which would have been either cork or wood.
this would have been a hand made item.

a truly french piece of history, what a conversation piece.
