18 century St Onge Oil Bottle
Known as a “Bonbonne Saintongeais”
This magnificent example of a St Onge oil bottle is truly a collectors piece. It has an incredible translucent green glaze.
These oil bottles were hand made on the South West coast of France in the commune of La Chapelle des Pots in the Charente Maritime department, the heart of the old Saintonge region of France.
It would have been made in the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century.
These bottles would have been used for storing and transporting plant oils such as walnut or olive oil.
During this period, walnut oil was the sole source for household lighting and olive oil for cooking and eating.
Height 13 inches (33cm) Width 7 inches (18 cm)
Place of origin: South West France
Date of manufacture: End of the 18thC to 1820,s
Condition: good condition, small chip at top but consistent with
age.
Material: fired Terra cotta. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
