Made from refined porcelain clay and decorated with underglaze cobalt blue, the jar typically features a robust ovoid shape with a wide shoulder and short neck. The blue decoration painted with abstract ;floral sprays in brushwork, exhibits a spontaneous, fluid quality distinct from the more formalized styles of Ming China. The jar’s soft, milky white glaze and bold blue accents embody the Joseon aesthetic ideal of restraint, naturalism, and quiet elegance. Unlike the more symmetrical and polished Chinese porcelains, Joseon blue-and-white ware embraced asymmetry and the beauty of imperfection The kintsugi repair, in which the chipped rim has been restored with gold-infused lacquer, adds a layer of poetic beauty. Today, a jar like this is celebrated not only for its rarity but for its ability to capture the balance between structure and spontaneity that defines Korean ceramics. See less
