But the work's moody embrace of nature at sundown suggests the creator's inspiration derived from the Hudson River School. This group of American artists shared a vision from about 1825 to 1875 that this new continent's natural beauty could offer a sense of national identity, and for each individual, a sense of spiritual renewal.
