Item description:
Large ceramic sculpture, modeled and decorated entirely by hand, depicting a warrior, a medieval knight with helmet, armor, and cloak, signed on one foot with a metal pen engraving by the artist, "Caruso," made in Italy around the mid-20th century. The plasticity of the work is particularly valuable, modeled entirely by hand by the artist, using gouges, pliers, and palettes, then decorated with a metal nib with engraved decorations on the armor, and finally decorated entirely by hand, brushstroke by brushstroke, a unique work created by an important 20th-century artist from Caltagirone.
Useful information for evaluating the object:
As evidence of Dino Caruso's artistic importance, it should be noted that one of his majolica works, entitled 'Woman with her head in her hands', owned by the MacC (Caltagirone Museum of Contemporary Art), was placed in the atrium of the Town Hall on the centenary of the artist's birth. Just type "Work by Dino Caruso placed in the lobby of the Town Hall" into Google and you will be able to see the article and the work.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
Dino Caruso, painter and sculptor, was born in Caltagirone in 1921. After an apprenticeship at various workshops in Caltagirone, he began working as a ceramist in the late 1930s in his own workshop, "Caruso Dino Ceramiche," in Catania. He presented some of his works at the Rome Quadriennale in 1948, repeating the experience in 1955. In 1950, he won first prize at the Caltagirone Art Biennale. Some of his works, inspired by the tradition of Caltagirone, are now on display in the rooms of the 18th-century Ospedale delle Donne, now the Civic Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Catania. He died in Catania in 1986.
