A vintage Japanese black lacquered wedding chest from the 19th Century hand painted design in and handmade silk ropes with finials. Created in Japan during the 19th C, this pair of antique wedding boxes features deep brown lacquer perfectly accented by a gilded hand-painted motif on lids. Created to be part of the extensive wedding trousseau provided to the daughter, this chest showcases a linear silhouette perfectly complimented by a dark red lacquer. A rectangular lid, adorned with brass corners, opens to reveal deep storage. The top and the façade are adorned with hand painted symbols and beautiful metal accents. . Wrapped with ropes, these vintage Japanese wedding chests will make for a great decorative addition to any home!.
Purchased at an antique store in Hawaii 40 years ago for $3500 ea
The tradition of these Wedding boxes.. were filled with shells and the bride and groom received them for wedding gifts and they had to take a shell out of each box and match it on their wedding night
the shell matching box tradition.
