"Garden Whimsy": American Etruscan Majolica Cauliflower Teapot
Griffen, Smith & Hill,
Circa 1879.
A delightful and highly collectible example of American Victorian majolica, produced under the famous "Etruscan Majolica" brand (Griffen, Smith and Hill) around 1879.
Executed in a vivid trompe l'oeil style, this teapot is naturalistically modeled as a whole cauliflower. The body is enveloped in overlapping, crinkled green leaves that form the spout and handle, while the lid mimics the textured, granular "curd" of the vegetable. The rich, translucent lead glazes—ranging from deep emerald to pale celadon—accentuate the molded relief, creating a sense of depth and realism characteristic of the best majolica wares.
Condition: Excellent antique condition. The glaze remains glossy and vibrant. Typical crazing commensurate with age and material.
Measurements:
Height: 5 3/4 inches (14.6 cm)
Width: 8 1/4 inches (21.0 cm)
Depth: 5 inches (12.7 cm)
Historical Context:
Etruscan Majolica was manufactured by Griffen, Smith and Hill (later Griffen, Smith & Co.) in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. Between 1879 and 1892, they became the premier American producers of majolica, rivaling the quality of English firms like Minton and Wedgwood. The "Cauliflower" pattern was a direct homage to the famous 18th-century wares developed by Josiah Wedgwood, revived here with the bold colors and whimsy preferred by the late Victorian market. This piece dates to the early period of the factory's production, noted for its crisp molding.
