About the Artist and Print

Utagawa Hiroshige (Japanese, 1797–1858), “Fukagawa Susaki Jūmantsubo,” from the series “Meisho Edo hyakkei” (One Hundred Famous Views of Edo), 1857, intercalary 5th month. Color woodblock print on paper; ōban nishiki-e.

Claude Monet accumulated an impressive 231 Japanese woodblock prints and displayed them throughout his house in Giverny, France.
One example of a print he owned is this literal bird’s-eye view by Utagawa Hiroshige. Such a dramatic perspective was among the more influential features emulated by many French and American artists who were inspired by the fresh viewpoints and novel compositions by their Japanese counterparts.
