USA, ca. early 20th century. An intriguing pair of aerial survey photos by the New York office of Fairchild Aerial Surveys, Inc. Both photos depict a low altitude, oblique view of an unknown landscape - perhaps a reservoir. The images retain a beautiful, age-appropriate warmth - yet are strikingly clear. Presented as found in original dark oak frames. Atmospheric with good scale, they are both in overall excellent antique condition.
Fairchild Aerial Surveys, Inc. was founded by Sherman Mills Fairchild in the years following WWI. Although denied entry into service as a pilot, Fairchild was determined to support the war effort and devoted his time to designing and developing new aerial cameras and techniques that revolutionized industry standards for military, municipal and commercial mapping throughout the 20s and 30s. By WWII, ninety-percent of flight-equipped cameras used in military operations and reconnaissance were designed by the firm. Fairchild survey photographs can be found in the New York State Archives, City of Boston Archives, as well as various museums and federal institutions.
