description of the item:
a wonderful, rare pair of cast ceramic sculptures (ceramic with added kaolin), glazed, vitrified, and decorated by hand, depicting a lion and a lioness lying in wait, or in a hunting position, with their bellies down, their eyes fixed on their prey and ready to pounce. The pair is signed under one of the four paws by the austrian manufacturer goldscheider, with the catalog number "7094" engraved on it. Made in 1935 and featured in the goldscheider general catalog, as shown in the photo below this description. The model was designed by ernst wahliss and then taken up by friedrich goldschider, founder of the manufacturer. This same pair is on display at the vienna museum, inventory number 220.764, as written in the catalogue entry shown in the last photo. The artistic quality of the sculptures is extremely high and their size is impressive. We can guarantee that they will look great on a piece of furniture.
useful information for evaluating the item:
goldscheider sculptures are by far the most important, sought-after, and highly valued of all those produced in europe in the last decades of the 1800s and early 1900s. Just to give you an idea of the value of the sculptures produced by this manufacturer, we did a quick search on the web and found that the four highest prices achieved by goldscheider ceramics range from €11,000 to €23,000, plus auction fees of 25-30%. We then found that sculptures of similar size, also depicting animals made by goldscheider in cast ceramic, are offered at €1,500 to €2,500 for single animals and €3,000 to €4,000 for pairs. Finally, consider that the subject depicted, a pair of lions, is particularly sought after by collectors of animal sculptures.
