Large multicolored glazed ceramic wall plate with incised decoration designed by Louis Waem in the 1940s as part of the Maîtrise de Nimy (1943-1950).
The Maîtrise de Nimy was a pioneering Belgian avant-garde movement that aimed to elevate ceramics to the level of art, in a context where production had, until then, been essentially industrial.
In 1943, a group of young artists moved into the buildings where Nimy pottery was made, under the direction of Raoul GODFROID, director of the Académie voor Schone Kunsten in Bergen, in consultation with his friends Jules Moreau, director of Nimy pottery.
The group consisted of eight young artists:
- Fernande Massart,
- Georges Destrebecq,
- Louis Waem,
- René Lemaigre,
- Pierre Monnaie,
- André Hupet,
- Irène Zacq
- Geneviève Noe.
The Maîtrise de Nimy gained international renown with exhibitions in New York, Amsterdam, Cairo, Milan, and Lisbon, as well as with the visit of Rainier, Prince of Monaco, to Mons in 1947.
In addition, she won first prize at the Milan Triennale in July 1948.
The Milan Triennale is an Italian cultural institution that hosts international exhibitions, conferences, and artistic events.
However, World War II proved fatal for the Nimy Pottery Factory, and production ceased permanently in 1951.
The plate features different shades of blue, from light to dark, sand to gold, and almond green.
The back of the plate features a color applied using the pointillist technique, applied irregularly from dark to light with green, black, and sand.
Iron hook for hanging on the wall.
