While so potent, and even sometimes transformative, love is imperceptible. Pity the artist. Yet in 1963, Raphael Coutoupe chiseled an idealized vision of two young people in love out of a beautifully grained block of wood. Were they models, friends, family, or even drawn from the artist's memories? Who knows? But the message is universal and timeless, still very appealing after more than half a century.
