This set depicts fifteen (15) of the images Henri Matisse (France 1869-1954) created to illustrate his mid 20th century groundbreaking book "Jazz". Cursive text is on the reverse of each of the lithographs. These diminutive lithographs were printed in Munich, Germany in 1957. Great for a large wall treatment or several smaller groupings. Dimensions: 7.25" x 4.75"

In addition to his bold innovations in painting and sculpture, Matisse produced several extraordinary artists’ books, the majority of which were made after a bout with intestinal cancer in 1941 that left him largely bedridden. This set depicts fifteen (15) of the images Matisse created to illustrate his groundbreaking book Jazz. Despite its musical title—likely named for the experimental, improvisational nature of its compositions—the book’s dominant themes are the circus and theater. The illustrations derive from maquettes of cut and pasted colored papers, which were printed using a stencil technique known as pochoir.
Henri Émile Benoît Matisse (France 1869-1954) was a French artist, known for both his use of color and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. He was a draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter. Matisse was recognized as a leader of the Fauves, along with André Derain. and as one of the great mid century modernists.
