This depiction of a young jockey in 1941, his complexion warm and glowing and his blue eyes echoing the color … Read more This depiction of a young jockey in 1941, his complexion warm and glowing and his blue eyes echoing the color of his shirt, was painted by Peter Hurd, one of New Mexico's most important artists in the 1930s and 40s. Hurd was born in New Mexico and studied in Philadelphia under N.C. Wyeth. He fell in love with Wyeth's daughter Henrietta, and the newly-married couple settled in New Mexico where he executed a long series of paintings that celebrated the people and landscape there. He also participated in the WPA mural arts program, completing murals in Big Springs and Dallas, Texas, and in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Hurd was an enthusiastic outdoorsman, horse rider and polo player, bringing him into contact with jockeys and others in the world of horse racing. See less
