Inspired by municipal fountains often seen in 19th-century Europe, this charming cast iron fountain from Toulouse, France, dates to the 1900s. Two column pilasters flank the high-arching wall, which is embellished with a meandering foliate rinceaux in bas relief. In the center of the crawling vines is a protruding circle with an aperture for a spout (not included) that is positioned over a rectangular basin featuring a thick, quarter-round edge adorned with lobing.
The small size (the basin is 5” H x 14” W x 10” D) allows for placement in a variety of areas around the house, both inside and outdoors. There are two installation holes in the back wall of the basin, indicating that the fountain was originally mounted to a wall in an elevated position, possibly on the exterior wall of a city building. A removable grate allows access to the drain, but it could also be used to support a small pot, making this an option as a unique planter box.
