Item description:
a stunning black opaline glass vase crafted in full art deco style by renowned austrian artist josef hoffmann in the early decades of the 20th century. In our opinion, the beauty and value of this piece lie above all in the perfection of its lines, with the upper bowl repeated in a very similar form in the lower base, which is also bowl-shaped but slightly smaller and inverted. A perfection of execution in creating a perfect, highly elegant shape in glass.
useful information for evaluating the item:
from an internet search, we found that a black opaline glass vase, very similar to ours, by josef hoffmann, 21 cm high, and therefore larger than ours, was listed at auction for €1,300-2,500, while a pair as tall as ours was listed for €1,200-1,800, all prices to which auction fees of 25-30% should be added. This is to give an idea of the value of this type of vase.
information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
josef franz maria hoffmann (brtnice, 1870 – vienna, 1956) was one of austria's leading architects, active between the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. Hoffmann is considered one of the greatest ceramists and artists of the viennese secession. He founded the wiener werkstatte together with koloman moser and absorbed michael powolny's wiener keramik, with whom he collaborated for many decades.
in 1987, the museum für angewandte kunst (mak) in vienna organized an exhibition in his honor. The museum still has a permanent exhibition of his works and also organizes special exhibitions on the architect and his contemporaries.
this piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
