engraver: jean-claude richard de saint-non (paris, 1727 – 1791) was a french engraver, designer and patron of the arts. Belonging to a noble family, he dedicated himself to art and travel from a young age, becoming a passionate promoter of classical culture.
during his grand tour in italy, he collected sketches and inspirations which he translated into elegant etchings and aquatints.
he is famous for having published the monumental "voyage picturesque ou des royaumes de naples et de sicile", which collects views, ruins and scenes of life in southern italy.
his refined style and sensitivity towards the ancient made him a central figure of the neoclassical taste of the 18th century.
