Description of the object:
Glazed and enameled ceramic plate, entirely decorated by hand, with a beautiful central decoration, a stylized horse in an archaic rural style, with a blue circle surrounding the edge applied using an airbrush technique. On the cup or rim of the plate, however, there is a brown octagon decorated with pearls, surrounded by another outer circle, also blue, which was also made entirely by hand. Signed "Tamburi" on the back and numbered with the Roman numeral 1. Made by Orfeo Tamburi, an important Italian artist. The plate dates from around 1950 and is the first piece to be produced with this decoration. We cannot know whether the artist produced other pieces or whether this is a unique piece.
Useful information for evaluating the object:
Orfeo Tamburi has numerous auction results, especially in the painting category, and according to our research, the artist's first four auction results range from €16,500 to over €20,000, plus auction fees of 25-30%. In the drawings category, on the other hand, the first four auction results found range from €3,000 to over €11,000, plus fees. This artist's ceramics are rather rare and a collector's item for art lovers.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
Orfeo Tamburi (Jesi, 1910 - Ermont, 1994) was primarily an Italian painter, but also a sculptor and ceramist. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and in 1936 traveled to Paris for the first time, where he came into contact with some of the most important painters of the time and discovered the work of Paul Cézanne. Upon his return to Italy, he collaborated with Roman theaters and was commissioned to decorate the lobby of the EUR theater. He participated in the Rome Quadriennale and, the following year, in the Venice Biennale, where he had the opportunity to meet the writer Curzio Malaparte. In the following years, he continued to participate in both the Rome Quadriennale and the Venice Biennale, while also staging solo exhibitions in Italy's most important cities, such as Milan, Rome, Florence, and Venice. At the end of World War II, he returned to Paris and expanded his activities, participating in solo exhibitions in Belgium, France, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. He traveled to the United States, where he exhibited at major museums in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York.
