Item description:
Beautiful vase entirely modeled on a potter's wheel and decorated entirely by hand with geometric patterns, made of glazed ceramic with a satin finish. The vase is signed under the base in orange underglaze "Cossa Italy" and was created by Diodoro Cossa, an Italian artist working in Vietri sul Mare of considerable artistic importance. Each decoration was applied with a brush in black and orange on a white background. The vase has a beautiful shape. In addition to the beauty of the decorations, it is worth noting the concentric grooves that start at the bottom and reach just below the decoration, created with extreme skill by lightly touching the vase as it turned on the potter's wheel. This is extremely difficult to achieve, especially at the bottom where the vase tends to narrow at the base, which has been enriched with a wonderful evanescent orange glaze applied with an airbrush, brighter at the top and becoming lighter towards the base.
Useful information for evaluating the object:
From our research, we have found several objects by Diodoro Cossa offered on other art sales sites ranging from €150-200 to requests of over €2,200 for a large vase. Our vase is not particularly large, but it features a highly valuable geometric decoration made entirely by hand.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
The Vietri painter and ceramist Diodoro Cossa worked as a decorator in Vietri Marina from the years immediately preceding the Second World War. He trained at the Royal School of Ceramics in Salerno, where he was a pupil of Renato Rossi. Famous above all for his decorations inspired by marine fauna, in the early 1950s he was appointed artistic director of the Salerno ceramics manufacturer "Ernestine." After a period of independent production, in the third quarter of the 20th century, together with Mario Carotenuto and Giannino Esposito, he took over Mario De Rosa's Salerno ceramics manufacturer "Tre Felci."
