Description of the item:
Majolica ceramic plate entirely hand-modeled on a potter's wheel, glazed and vitrified, entirely hand-decorated with leaves and finished with rich metallic lustres. The plate is signed on the back "Lega Faenza" and bears a stamp with the words "Ceramiche Artistiche Faentine." The object was created by Leandro Lega, an important artist from Faenza who was active in the second half of the 20th century. The plate is a good size and features an impressive lead-rich metallic glaze finish that creates a delightful rainbow effect when touched by light.
Useful information for evaluating the object:
Our research shows that a larger plate, very similar to ours, also with stylized leaves and a lustre finish, is listed at auction for €300-600. Bear in mind that this is the starting price at auction, which could easily rise during the auction and to which auction fees of 25-30% must always be added. We have also found other plates with a similar design to ours, but with different decorations, offered on other art sales websites for between €300 and €660, such as a large fruit bowl with abstract decorations and a lustre finish, offered on Pamono.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
Since the mid-1950s, Leandro Lega has been the owner of the artistic ceramics manufacturer "Lega Ceramiche," located in Faenza, at Via Fratelli Rosselli 61/a. The factory's kilns produce ceramics inspired by the Faenza tradition, revisited with a popular and modern spirit, as well as sculptural works with a clear informal and abstract imprint. In the 1960s, the Faenza potter Pier Paolo Garavini was one of the company's collaborators. In 1974, after completing her technical studies, his daughter Carla joined her father's workshop as a decorator.
